Last night Chris and I had a date night. We went to see the US Navy Band perform at Jekyll Island. What a phenomenal night!
I had seen some videos online of the various Navy bands performing – especially around the holidays. There is a Concert Band, Sea Chanters, and Cruisers (think Jazz band). They are great musicians and performers! Seeing as Chris is in the Navy and I am a question asker, I started asking how we could see them perform. I found their schedule online.. for their national tour (it was really only the Southeast… luckily that’s where we are!)
The concert was sponsored by local organizations and while we had to get tickets, it did not cost anything. Even better! When we got to the convention center where the performance was it was quite busy! And I was impressed with the ballroom they had set up — they said there were 2000 chairs set up! As everyone filtered in, I’d guess that at least 1500 people were in attendance.
The structure of the concert was well thought out – they had a mix of different genres, featured different performers, and a nice mix of emotional songs and less emotional songs. They performed “Lean On Me” as a tribute to military spouses – I might have shed a tear… Other included tunes were Proud, Whup! Jamboree (Sea Chanty), Blue Jackets on Parade, a tribute to the Andrews Sisters, Turning Point, Fly Me to the Moon, Mission Impossible theme, Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, Rather Be, Earth Wind and Fire medley, For Freedom, America the Beautiful, and Armed Forces on Parade.
If you ever have the chance to see them perform, I highly HIGHLY recommend it. You can also check out their videos on various social media outlets (they are on Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram!) This is a group of performers who are not only very talented, but they serve a powerful role in supporting moral among our active duty military. And I just love a good musical performance — music plays a pretty powerful role in my life too!
Do you have regular date nights with your significant other? What are some of your favorite dates? Do you like to go to musical performances?
